First, let's talk about what he wanted to be a blog writer. If you get some popular items you can get some regular readers. When you've got a few subscribers (a couple hundred would be weird), not present their content in social media - let the readers do it for you. And they will, if the article merits attention. If it is not worthy, you do not want to present it anyway. Effects of popular - or, rather, a few popular items - a big, what should happen independently. It gets you noticed on other blogs, and they are your market.
Reviews blog. Another great way to get attention. Write more bloggers and offer to do a guest post. Suggest a great idea for a guest post that will do well for bloggers. Include links to some of the best entries letter samples. If you write 10 good blogs (starting with the upper first blog, not in the Technorati Top 100), you can get 1.2 to say "yes." If so, rejoice! Now write an amazing post for a link to your blog at the end. Some of them, and you get a wide audience for your blog, or even better, you'll get noticed more. And then you start branding themselves as a good writer.
Write a good blog. Once you have created a brand for themselves and gave notice, and developed a case letters to your own blog and elsewhere, take the plunge and write some of the great blogs. Those with money, because the small (one person) can not pay you. Send a polite email asking if they have openings for freelance writers.

Keep your eyes open for blogs looking for writers, especially in the niche that you are aware of. You can set up as a writer in search of work, with a link to your blog. Apply plenty of jobs, just to see what they can offer. Know the value. Have a target per hour speed you want for free. I charge just below that on the first run, just to get a foot in the door. Once you have written in some time (several weeks) at lower speeds, only to find a job in your hair after that.
Give your best. If you get an independent concert by writing blogs, or court-mail or two, do not forget to, our best. Imagine the message that can do very well on Digg or delicious. Medium blog posts does not help you write for, and certainly does not help you.
Know your topic. It is better to write about things you know. If you know anything about this stuff, you probably look silly. If you only know a little about the topic, research it like crazy until you know tons. To write about issues you're already familiar with to save you time, and probably will be much better read.
